Forced to flee his home four years earlier after coming out to his parents, Ryan has now come home to see his twin sister Nicole marry his best friend Peter. Unsure of just what kind of reception he will receive, he goes to a homeless shelter for the night. Unable to sleep, he walks to the church where in just a few hours his sister is getting married. The last thing he expects is to run into Daniel, his best friend’s big brother, in the middle of the night. Daniel is the man that Ryan always had a crush on growing up. They use to hang out together all the time, and Daniel is the reason he felt the need to come out to his parents to start with.
Daniel searched far and wide four years ago when Ryan disappeared. Something told him to be in the park across the street from the church where his brother was getting married in the morning. When he finds Ryan sitting on a bench almost hidden in the dark, he is so happy. Reassuring Ryan that his sister still loves him, he invites him home for the night. Knowing that the man he cares about is in the next room is hard on him, but the last thing he wants to do is scare him away now that he has finally found him again.
Can Daniel convince Ryan to stop running and accept help from his family and friends? Or will Ryan run again when confronted with the parents that disowned him, and threatened his friends if he went to them for help four years earlier?
To Find and To Keep is a touching story about finding that love you thought was gone for good. It is hard enough for someone to admit to family and friends that they’re interested in someone of the same gender, but to be forced to run because of it in this day and age is unforgivable. This story makes me want to cry for anyone that feels scared about who they are. I hope that as you read this story it makes you understand more deeply the plight of people today that are not what society considers “normal”, be it their sexual orientation or what they do for work or the way they look to the world. We need to have love and understanding in our hearts and minds for everyone. I am glad that Serena Yates wrote this story and even happier to have read it for myself.
