Review: Lena @ Queer Magazine Online

'Liberating the Security Specialist' by Serena Yates continues Ivan and Emilio's story from book 7, 'Developing the Counsellor.' With their relationship cemented, they yearn to be together all the time; but they live and work an hour away from each other which makes this impractical. Once separated, they both experience a feeling of loss which borders on grief. They are both miserable, along with everyone else near them, and realize they need to find a solution to their problem.
Ivan's willingness to do everything possible to ensure that Emilio has the honest, loving relationship that he deserves is a testament to his commitment. This is especially evident when he comes out to his father, the thing he dreaded most. I admired him for putting Emilio first and was so proud of him for not even being tempted by his past love interest and making sure that he knew Emilio was the love of his life. This showed how sincere he was about loving Emilio and how much he wanted to share his life with him.
Emilio is adorable. Because of past hurts, he has his doubts, but when he commits to a relationship with Ivan, he does it in every way. He puts Ivan first in all he does. He's miserable apart from him and immediately works to solve the problem even though he knows it means a lot of changes for him; being with Ivan is the most important thing in his life. I love the confidence he gains by being in love, how he stands up for himself and what's his. It made me so happy to see him making decisions from a position of strength rather than insecurity. That's what love can do for a person.
Ivan and Emilio are one of the most endearing couples in the New Horizons series. Their love and passion is admirable and inspiring. It was good to see that they were able to make their dreams come true and take their lives in a new direction. This book can be read alone, but to get the full impact of the story, I'd suggest reading the books in which these characters have previously appeared (New Horizons #5, 6, and 7). I'd suggest to readers new to Serena's work as well her current followers that they curl up in a favorite chair, relax and enjoy basking in Ivan and Emilio's love. Thanks, Serena, for bringing this series to an end with such a delightful, heartwarming story.
